How it all started: As told by Dr. Alisa Kauffman
In 1988, I had an epiphany. My best friend Beth Wilf’s father had impeccable oral health. He knew the importance of great oral hygiene and was on a regular every-three-month schedule with the hygienist at the office of Dr. Igor Gerzon, a prosthodontist and my husband. However, a stroke left Mr. Moorstein without speech and without the ability to brush and floss his teeth on his own.
When it came time to see the hygienist after his stroke, he had to cancel. That was my moment to step in and help. I absolutely love helping someone to heal. Whether I am extracting a painful tooth or feel the joy of seeing a patient take the first bite of food and chew it with new, well-fitting dentures that I created.
Treating Mr. Moorstein was the first time I attended to a patient in their home, and thus, Geriatric Housecall Dentistry was born.
How is Geriatric House Call Dentistry different?
The oral care needs of geriatric patients are much different than those of younger and even middle-aged patients, and often present more challenges to dentists which why the elderly community is often overlooked and underserved. This is where our practice comes in. We have developed methods to treat patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia, and have revolutionized the field of home health care dentistry. Unfortunately, there is no other dental practice in the New York City area, or in the country that specializes in these methods.
Dental Services for homebound geriatric patients
The core services of Geriatric House Call Dentistry include: emergency visits, second opinions, dental exams, cleanings, small fillings, extractions, denture and partial fabrication & repairs. To see a full list of services and their description click here.
How can you get dental care for an elderly patient?
We serve many locations, but are currently in a growth phase and are seeking to help patients across the United States. Simply fill out the contact form on the location where the patient is located and the dentist who works in that area will contact you for scheduling – or we will work to refer you to someone who can help.
