Different types of dentures

Thanks to modern advancements in medicine and dentistry, fewer people are losing all their teeth in old age. Even though edentulism rates decrease by 10% each year, many elderly adults still need dentures to eat, drink, and speak properly. There are several denture options that are designed to suit different budgets and oral health needs. When you call Geriatric House Call Dentistry, we will work with you and your loved one to select the best type of dentures for them. We treat homebound patients with all types of dementia to make dental care accessible for those who need it most.

Denture Options for Elderly Dementia Patients

Complete Dentures

The ADA estimates that 90% of edentulous Americans wear complete dentures. Complete dentures are necessary if all of the patient’s teeth need to be extracted. Patients must wait 8-12 weeks after the extraction to have their dentures placed. According to the American Dental Association, extraction wounds can take several months to heal, so this denture option will take several months to complete.

Partial Dentures

Geriatric House Call Dentistry strives to extract as few teeth as possible. If the patient is able to keep any of their teeth, they can get partial dentures made to make eating and drinking more comfortable. Partial dentures are easy to remove for cleaning, and they are usually made from acrylic.

Custom Dentures

Custom dentures are costly, but they offer a natural, beautiful look that patients love. This is an excellent option for patients who are concerned about their appearance and have more to spend.

Same Day Dentures

While complete dentures can take months, same day or immediate dentures are a great option for patients with permitting dental health. If the patient is a good candidate for immediate dentures, they won’t have to wait months to get their new smile. This type of denture is a great option because it allows the patient to eat, talk, and get used to life with dentures right away.

Implant Supported Dentures

Implant supported dentures look natural and last a long time. This denture option requires a dental implant that supports the dentures and holds them in place.

Overdentures

This denture option is removable. It fits comfortably over the gums and is secured by a dental implant wherever the patient needs extra support.

Snap-In Dentures

Snap-in dentures are popular and effective because they stay in place better than other types of dentures. Fasteners on the dentures and implants snap together to keep the dentures from moving or causing discomfort. This denture option works great for edentulous patients who have enough remaining bone to support the implants.

Economy Dentures

If you’re on a tight budget, economy dentures may be a good option for your loved one. However, this denture option is not known for being comfortable or stylish. Denture paste is required to hold this type of denture in place, and many patients report discomfort or difficulty chewing while wearing economy dentures.
